Youth Community Boating Safety

OMF's program designed to "waterproof our youth."

This is OMF's flagship program, which has served as a model for other community sailing programs throughout the United States. Sailing teaches skills and values that translate into everyday life. Students learn to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and develop self-confidence. Nearly 4,000 children have completed the program since 1985.

This ten-hour course for children ages 9 to 17 focuses on boating and personal water safety. Students learn sailing fundamentals, safe boat handling, and water survival. All students practice floating fully clothed, wearing a personal floatation device. Safety techniques taught include capsize survival and recovery, hypothermia prevention, and emergency signals. The course is taught by experienced instructors certified by the United States Sailing Association.

The $40 course fee includes everything necessary for the student to complete the program. Upon completion of the program, the student qualifies to begin the Red Book course below.

Red Book Sailing Classes

The Red Book program is for students who wish to continue their boating and sailing education after completing the Youth Community Boating Safety program. Each student learns to sail solo. The course teaches 27 skills, including rigging, knots, and navigation rules. This course can lead students to national certification by the US Sailing Association. Cost is $50.
